The legendary B-17 is considered to be one of the most significant heavy bombers of World War II. This four-engine aircraft was capable of flying at extremely high altitudes while carrying a heavy bomb load. In 1937, when the threat of warin Europe had become more imminent, the B-17 was fully integrated into America’s military procurement planning. By 1940, a total of 129 B-17s had been ordered,. Many of those aircraft were destroyed in Hawaii and in the Philippines when the United States came under attack by the Japanese on December 7, 1941. Just dayslater, the surviving airplanes were used in an effort to counter Japanese landings in the Philippines. However, the B-17’s most vital wartime role was in the massive daylight bombing campaign waged on Germany’s important military manufacturing plants.
